Rev. Dr. Brian Bosworth
I am Brian Bosworth, Senior Pastor of Decatur’s First United Methodist Church. I grew up in a military family and have a great respect for anyone having to start over again when “life happens.” I learned early on that no matter how hard we plan or prepare, we cannot control everything.
Called to follow God
As a child, I did not attend church much at all. It wasn’t until I was in high school that I attended church regularly. I am happy to say I met my future wife while participating in the youth activities of my Methodist Church in Greenville, Texas. It’s also in that same church that I can look back and realize I experienced my first call to ministry as a teenager.
Start in Ministry
I was afraid of that call and kept those feelings suppressed for a number of years while I went ahead with what I wanted and had planned to do. I went to college at Texas A&M University, married Melissa, began a law enforcement career, and started having children. Over the years, I realized that God was placing “tools in my toolbox” that I would use later for ministry. One day my son asked me if I would go to church with my family. When I finally said yes and went, it felt as if I had never left my relationship with God. I attended regularly and served the church in many fashions. In 2000, I finally felt the stirring of the Holy Spirit and said “yes” to that call to ministry from many years before. I attended Perkins School of Theology at SMU as I completed a great career in law enforcement over five years. After graduating with a Master of Divinity in 2005, I returned to graduate school again and earned a Doctor of Ministry Degree from the Saint Paul School of Theology. I have served churches in Greenville and Sulphur Springs before coming to Decatur in 2012.
Other Information about Me
I am an ordained Elder and a member in full connection of the North Texas Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church. I married Melissa in 1984. We have two grown children, Megan and her husband Evan (who also provided us with 2 wonderful grandchildren, Hudson and Presley) and Corey and his wife Kate. I enjoy riding motorcycles, camping, travel, golf, and reading.
FUMC Decatur and the Community
I am excited for Decatur and Wise County. I have been in communities where increased population and growth are occurring. For people concerned with the spiritual health and well being of others, I know this church and other churches must remain aware that there are many who are searching for a place to experience God’s grace. I think this church has been such a place for more than 150 years. Our Biblical grounding, not to mention our understanding of our need to love God and neighbor, along with our experiences and respect of tradition, will serve God and this community for years to come. I believe we will continue to make a positive difference in the lives of individuals and our community.
Challenging all members at First UMC Decatur
I believe God will continue to do exciting things with the Methodists of this community. I would be honored to meet you personally and perhaps drink a cup of coffee with you if you want to get to know me better!
