The Common Ground Book Club/Discussion Group will resume its meetings on Tuesday, September 20th from 5:30 pm to 7 pm, in Asbury Hall.
All who are interested in participating are encouraged to attend this first meeting at which time a group decision will be made as to future meeting dates and times. The first book to be reviewed is “Beautiful Country” by Qian Julie Wang, and pages 1-56 will be discussed at the September 20 meeting.
In Chinese the word for America, Mei Guo, translates directly to “beautiful country.” This is a memoir of the author who arrived in America in 1994 at age seven, with her mother (Ma Ma) to join her father (Ba Ba) who had come to America earlier. He could no longer stay in a country where he did not have freedom of expression. Both of Qian’s parents were professors in China, yet their education and background became meaningless and their comfortable life disappeared in America. The parents were forced to labor in sweatshops in America.
Prior registration for participation in the book club is not required, please just join us on September 20 in Asbury Hall.
