It’s Time for Another Great Day of Service!

Sunday, November 19, 2017

Many of us had a memorable time last spring when the Sunday worship experience involved a service opportunity with a food drive as an act of worship. Last spring it was kept a surprise, but this time we want everyone to know so that no one is left out in another very meaningful experience.

On Sunday, November 19, 2017, during both services, we are again putting our collective energies together to help feed people in Decatur. In past years, our Church and its members have given financially to buy “Thanksgiving Boxes” (items for a complete Thanksgiving meal) that were already assembled by a third-party vendor and then a few church members delivered the boxes on Saturday before Thanksgiving. It has always been a joy to be a part of delivering the boxes.

This year, we will actually buy each of the items on the list, then assemble the items into boxes, and deliver them to the pre-registered families. All of this will take place on Sunday, November 19, 2017, during worship. Then we will all, including any of the families that we just delivered boxes to, sit down for the Church’s annual Thanksgiving dinner. It’s another Great Day of Service!

This is the basic schedule for that Sunday morning (we will begin both worship services with prayer, singing, and a devotion and then dismiss for service work):

  • 8:30 a.m. Worship – lists for food items distributed; off to the store to shop; return items to Church.
  • 9:45 a.m. Sunday School as usual.
  • 10:50 a.m. Worship – purchased food items are assembled into boxes; delivery Team Captains and team members depart to designated addresses to deliver boxes; everyone returns in time to all sit down for Thanksgiving Dinner at the Church.

Everyone is invited to be a part of this great service opportunity and to worship a little bit differently on that Sunday. Feel free to be involved in both services. There will be plenty to do, and chairs available to sit and be a part of the assembly line. If you have mobility issues or feel you cannot shop or deliver, we still want you to participate. We always need encouragement and prayer support.

Team Captains are needed (5-6 Teams) and will be responsible for getting their delivery team to load 10-15 boxes on a pickup or van and directing their team to the designated addresses in a timely fashion so that everyone can return to the Church for Thanksgiving Dinner.

The Community Ministries Team is leading on this endeavor. If you are willing to be a Team Captain, please contact the Church Office or sign-up at the volunteer table near the elevator on the main floor of the Church.

We hope this opportunity resonates with you as a way to show God our thankfulness and our
neighbors that we care about them!
